1. Root Causes of Drag Degradation and Drag Failure

1.1 Permanent damage to drag washers (primary cause)

Jigging fishing often requires high drag settings to handle large fish. Continuous high compression flattens, deforms and wears carbon or felt drag washers, permanently lowering friction output. Storing the reel with maximum drag fully locked is the most common user error, causing irreversible washer compression, weak drag performance and inability to lock tight.

1.2 Salt intrusion and contamination inside the drag chamber

Saltwater penetrates through main shaft gaps and forms salt crystals and fine debris between friction washers. This creates uneven friction, vague drag indexing, inconsistent tension and subtle slippage, which mimics brake failure under load.

1.3 Thermal fade under high-load friction

During long fish runs, continuous high-speed friction generates extreme heat inside the drag system, resulting in drag thermal fade. The friction coefficient drops significantly under high temperature, causing obvious drag weakness. This is a temporary physical performance reduction, not mechanical damage, but it frequently leads to lost fish during heavy jigging battles.

1.4 Mechanical structural failure (low probability)

Fatigue or slipping of internal circlips, limit plates and spring components may cause the drag knob to idle without compressing the washers. Worn main shafts or drive gears can also cause insufficient pressure transmission, resulting in complete drag failure.

2. Prevention and Daily Maintenance Standards

  • Correct storage: Never store the reel with maximum drag locked. Always release drag to a light tension state after use to avoid permanent washer compression.
  • Professional cleaning: Avoid high-pressure water flushing on the shaft and drag opening. Rinse gently with fresh water and dry thoroughly. Perform regular internal drag chamber cleaning and periodic washer replacement.
  • Pre-fishing inspection: Test maximum drag tension onshore before offshore trips to confirm solid locking and zero slippage under load.
  • Standard operation: Avoid full-lock drag during prolonged fish fights. Maintain proper line release margin to reduce continuous thermal accumulation and prevent thermal fade.
  • Lubrication discipline: Never apply thick grease to drag washers. Excess lubricant reduces friction and causes slippage. Only apply a micro-thin layer of dedicated drag grease.

3. Troubleshooting & Permanent Solutions

  • Initial inspection: Check whether the drag knob idles, to rule out spring or circlip structural failure.
  • Core repair: Disassemble the drag chamber and inspect washers. Replace all deformed, worn, fuzzy, salt-caked or aged drag washers directly — cleaning alone cannot restore degraded drag performance.
  • Final calibration: After installing new washers, apply ultra-thin professional drag grease, test drag linearity and locking consistency on land, and confirm stable performance before offshore use.
