Here is where I land on all of it, after thirty nights, four rods, and one very expensive lesson in tentacle physics.

Fast versus slow is the wrong question. The right question is: does this rod have a crisp, sensitive tip for detection, and a soft, forgiving mid-section for the fight? If the answer is yes to both, it is a squid rod, and it will land fish for you. If the answer is yes to only one, it is a compromise, and squid will find the weakness.

The fast action rod in my test was not a bad rod. It was a beautiful rod. It just answered a question that squid do not ask. It was built to drive hooks into bone, and it was being used to hold barbless points in soft tissue.
