All three fit. Every one of them was inside my pack for all fifty-four miles. That is already a win over any four-piece rod on the market.

But here is what the numbers do not show, and it is the thing I want you to take away.

Rod C fit in my pack's side pocket. That sounds like a small thing. It was not. It meant that when I wanted to fish, I did not have to open my pack. The telescopic is more than twice as fast as the six-piece when your hands have stopped working. Nineteen seconds versus cold-numb fumbling with five alignment dots. If you have ever tried to seat a spigot ferrule with wet, cold fingers while the hatch is coming off, you know exactly what I am describing, and you know why the number matters.

Two things jump out.

At twenty feet, all three are identical. That is the distance you actually fish on a mountain creek or a small alpine lake. If you are buying a fishing rod for backpacking, this is your reality, and at your reality there is no performance difference at all.

At thirty-five and fifty feet, Rod C actually won, and it won because it had only two ferrules instead of five. Fewer joints, smoother bend curve, better loop control. That is the physics working exactly as you would predict: every joint is a stiff spot, and stiff spots interrupt the bend.

The telescopic did trail at distance, and I want to be honest about why, because the reason is interesting. Rod C landed the most fish and the biggest fish, but I want to be careful about claiming that means it is the "best rod," because there is a confound I have to be honest about.

Rod C caught more because I fished it more. It came out of the side pocket in seconds, so I used it on every spot I passed rather than only on the spots where I felt like unpacking. The rod was not necessarily better at catching fish. It was better at being available.
