GOOFISH Abyss Jigger Gen 2 Review: Specs, Drag & Fit

· Goofish®Rod-More Than Fishing

Abyss Jigger Gen 2-inspired reel display with silver cutout sideplate and dark T-bar grip, headed Specifications, Fit and Setup.

The GOOFISH Abyss Jigger Gen 2 combines 6.08:1 gearing, CNC-machined aluminum construction, lever-operated drag and a T-bar grip for vertical and slow-pitch jigging setups. Its practical appeal depends on whether the complete reel suits your line, rod, retrieve hand and handling preferences.

This specification-based review examines the listed features and the checks that matter before buying. It is not a first-hand fishing test or a measured comparison of drag heat performance. The useful question is how the documented equipment fits your setup, not whether an upgrade label guarantees more fish.

Abyss Jigger Gen 2 specifications

  • Gear ratio: 6.08:1.
  • Reference retrieve per handle turn: 30.06 inches, varying with spool fill.
  • Bearing configuration: listed as 9+2, with an additional thrust bearing.
  • Listed maximum drag: 30 kg, not a recommended everyday setting.
  • Reference line capacity: 300 m of 0.27 mm line.
  • Approximate complete reel weight: 680 g.
  • Construction: CNC-machined aluminum with an anodized finish.
  • Grip: T-bar.
  • Retrieve versions: Right GR500 and Left GL500.
  • Listed color choices: Silver/Blue, Silver/Green and Pink/Gold.

Check the exact selected option on the GOOFISH Abyss Jigger Gen 2 product page. Weight and capacity are approximate, and a listed feature does not establish a performance result under every fishing load.

Lever-operated drag: identify the controls correctly

The current product description specifies lever-operated drag with fine adjustment. That description does not, by itself, establish two separate strike and full levers or a universal operating sequence. Do not assign functions to visible fittings without the model's instructions.

Identify fighting drag, spool release and any preset adjustment separately. Follow the required setup position and sequence. Do not adjust a preset under load unless the supplied instructions explicitly permit it, and do not assume another lever-drag reel works identically.

Marked positions, where present, are not standardized force values. Choose a conservative working setting for the complete rod, main line, leader and knots. Do not calculate it from a percentage of the reel's maximum drag or automatically increase resistance when a fish surges.

For the broader control comparison, read star drag versus lever drag for saltwater jigging. Control shape alone does not rank heat resistance, usable force or durability.

6.08:1 gearing and the retrieve reference

The gear ratio describes the relationship between handle rotation and spool rotation during retrieval. It does not specify a single jig cadence, casting distance or ease of cranking under load. Choose your rhythm for the technique and conditions rather than assuming one ratio suits every situation.

The listed 30.06-inch retrieve figure is a reference, not an average that remains fixed through a full drop. Line pickup changes with the effective diameter of the loaded spool. A fuller spool and a nearly empty spool do not recover identical lengths per handle turn.

Do not use the reel handle to winch free of a snag or force winding through tangled line. Stop and inspect if the outfit develops new resistance or abnormal operation.

Capacity: use the stated diameter

The 300 m reference uses 0.27 mm line. It is not a promise that every braid sold under a particular strength or PE label will fit in that amount. Actual diameter, packing and the amount already loaded matter.

Avoid converting that capacity into a guaranteed fishing depth. Current, line angle and an appropriate reserve affect the amount of line required. Select jig weight for the rod and conditions; the capacity row does not establish a universal jig, leader strength or working depth.

Inspect line lay and avoid overfilling. Stop and clear loose loops rather than winding over them. Follow the model's line-handling guidance, keep fingers clear of moving parts and never wrap loaded line around a hand.

What the T-bar grip and 680 g weight mean for fit

Gen 2-inspired reel and grip detail collage labeled Grip and Fit, Model and Retrieve Hand, and Instructions and Care.
Compare grip preference, retrieve hand and instructions before choosing. Exterior detail views are not a drag-control operating diagram.

The T-bar offers a different hand-contact shape from the Gen 1 ball-style grip. Comfort depends on the angler, handle clearance, rod and fishing routine. A broader grip shape alone does not prove greater mechanical advantage or better bite detection.

The approximate 680 g figure is the complete reel's listed weight. It does not establish an inherently lightweight outfit or guarantee reduced fatigue. Assess balance with the intended rod, and check control access gently without a fishing load.

Select Right GR500 if you wind with your right hand or Left GL500 if you wind with your left. Do not assume the handle can be transferred between sides.

Gen 2 versus Gen 1: compare documented differences

The Abyss Jigger Gen 1 lists the same 6.08:1 ratio, a ball-style metal grip, approximate weight of 544 g and capacity of 300 m of 0.37 mm line. Gen 2 lists a T-bar grip, an additional thrust bearing, approximate weight of 680 g and 300 m of 0.27 mm line.

The capacity rows use different diameters, so they are not a like-for-like comparison. The bearing description identifies a design feature; it does not quantify a smoothness improvement or prove a thermal advantage. Likewise, complete reel weight cannot establish spool inertia.

Choose between the documented grip, weight, line requirements and model instructions rather than assuming a later generation wins every comparison.

CNC construction and saltwater care

CNC-machined aluminum construction and an anodized finish describe features, not whole-reel waterproofing, zero flex or lifetime alignment. Do not extend the body description to the material of every internal component.

Follow the supplied maintenance instructions. The product guidance calls for gently removing surface salt with a fresh-water-damp cloth, using a soft brush on accessible exterior areas and drying before storage. Avoid pressure jets, immersion and spraying lubricant into unknown internal locations.

Use only the specified lubricant, locations and service intervals. Do not assume every drag washer should be greased. Persistent grinding, binding, inconsistent release, immersion or impact calls for service guidance rather than a guessed internal repair.

Before ordering or fishing

  1. Confirm the generation, retrieve hand and color selection.
  2. Check reel-seat compatibility, complete outfit balance and handle clearance.
  3. Compare intended line diameter with capacity, allowing suitable reserve.
  4. Obtain the exact drag and spool-release instructions before using the controls.
  5. Inspect the outfit and check normal operation conservatively before applying a fishing load.

The Gen 2 is worth considering when its listed capacity, lever-operated controls and T-bar layout suit your vertical jigging setup. It is not an automatic choice for every rod or angler. Documented fit, understandable controls and a workable care routine are stronger reasons to buy than an unsupported game-changer claim.
