There is a particular kind of silence on a boat when a grown man unpacks the "wrong" rod.

Not the silence of disapproval. Worse. The silence of three mates who have heard you talk about your custom build for eighteen months, who have watched you fuss over guide spacing at 11 p.m. with a caliper in your teeth, and who are now watching you pull a yellow goofish rod bag out of the cabin instead.

"Thought you were bringing the custom," said Dutch, not looking up from his leader.

"I did bring the custom," I said, which was technically true. It was in the cabin, in its sock, judging me.

What came out of the bag was a goofish ocean assassin, a 6'4" one-piece stick in 64 mh, with mh power written into the blank's whole personality. And over the next three days on the Yellow Sea, that rod proceeded to humiliate a rod that cost me nearly twice as much and that I had helped design.

This is not a hit piece on custom rods. I love that rod. I still have it. But something happened out there that I have been turning over in my head for weeks, and the honest version of the story is more interesting than either "Chinese rod good" or "custom rod better." 🎣

So pull up a chair. This got long.


The Custom: Eighteen Months, One Builder, Far Too Much Money

Let me give you the victim's background first, because the comparison only means something if you know what I was walking away from.

I built that rod with a builder named Wen, out of a workshop behind a bait shop in Rongcheng. The blank was a composite slow-pitch model with a moderate action, cut to 6'3", built spiral-wrapped for an overhead reel. We spent two evenings on guide layout alone, using the tape-on-and-test method, moving the stripper guide three separate times before the line path stopped chattering under load.

Six hundred and seventy dollars, and about forty hours of my own obsessing. The finished rod weighed 196 g, balanced two centimetres ahead of the seat with my reel on, and cast a 250 g jig further than anything else I owned. It was, and I will defend this, a genuinely lovely piece of work.

Which is exactly why what happened next stung.


The Trip: 40 Nautical Miles, 95 Metres, and One Bad Decision

We were running out of a small harbour east of Weihai in a 26-footer with a single 250 on the back. Wind forecast said 12 knots, which in September means 12 knots until about 09:00 and then whatever the sea feels like after that.

The plan was structure. Three marks: a wreck in 55 m, a reef ledge in 95 m, and — if the sea stayed down — a run at 140 m for hapuka and whatever else was home.

I had packed the custom rod, and I had also packed the goofish ocean assassin, which had arrived at my door eleven days earlier and which I had only fished twice, both times close to shore, both times inconclusive. Taking both was not a plan. It was cowardice dressed up as thoroughness.

And then, at 05:20, forty minutes into the run, I made the decision that this whole blog is about.

The spray was coming over the bow hard enough that I had the rod bags wedged under the console. I reached for the custom, unzipped the sock, and saw — in the grey pre-dawn light — a hairline crack in the epoxy about four inches above the foregrip.

Now, a hairline in finish epoxy is not structural. Every rod builder will tell you that. Cosmetic. Harmless. I know this. I know this.

But I also know what saltwater does to a hairline over nine hours, and I know what a mid-blank failure feels like when there is 18 kilos of amberjack on the other end, and I did not feel like finding out 40 miles offshore.

So I zipped it back up, and I pulled out the ocean assassin.

Dutch's eyebrows went up about a quarter of an inch. Nobody said anything. We fished. 🌊


Day One: The Wreck in 55 Metres (Where I Started to Suspect)

Water temp 22.4°C. Light current. We were working 180 g and 200 g centre-balanced jigs on the drop, standard stuff.

Here is the first thing that hit me, and it is not what I expected: the rod was quieter than my custom rod.

Not less sensitive. Quieter. My custom build has a lot of personality in the blank — you feel everything, including the water. It chatters. It sings. On a good day that is intoxicating. On a day with any chop at all, when the boat is moving and the line is sawing through the swell, that chatter becomes noise, and noise is the enemy of reading a bite.

The premium vertical jigging rod from goofish, with its solid nano blank, filtered more. It told me about the jig and the bottom and the fish, and it kept the boat to itself. Within forty minutes I was picking out takes on the fall that I am fairly certain I would have missed on the custom, purely because there was less else going on in my hands.

By 11:00 I had landed four decent sea bass and lost one that felt better. Dutch, on a Japanese parabolic rod worth roughly triple the goofish, had landed three. Not a blowout. But I was no longer embarrassed, which at 05:20 I had been prepared to be.


Let's Talk Numbers: What 6'4", 64 MH, and MH Power Actually Mean

Right, let us get into the weeds, because this is where most write-ups get lazy and I do not want to be that guy.

Length: 6'4" (about 193 cm)

Six foot four is, in my increasingly firm opinion, the single most underrated length in offshore jigging. The fashion right now is long — flagship slow-pitch rods are coming out at 6'10", and plenty of specialists run 7'3" for long-fall work. Length gives you jig travel per stroke and more line picked up per crank, which is real.

But length is a lever, and your wrist is the fulcrum, and levers charge interest. Every extra 15 cm out front is more moment arm you are holding up for nine hours. 6'4" is the point where you still get authority over a 300 g jig but you are not paying for it in hour eight.

It is also, practically, the longest rod that behaves itself on a 26-foot boat with four people and a tuna door. Anything longer swings outside the gunwale and starts looking for somebody to hit.

Power and action: 64 MH and MH power

MH power means medium-heavy. In the Japanese-influenced class system that most offshore blanks use, that puts it roughly in the bracket that handles line from about 10 kg up to 30 kg, which in PE terms is somewhere in the PE 3 to PE 6 neighbourhood depending on whose braid you spool.

Here is the thing that matters far more than the power rating, though: action.

The ocean assassin is listed as fast action, specifically concentrated in the top third of the blank. That is a different animal from the parabolic curve you get on a purpose-built slow-pitch rod. Let me put that in plain language:

  • Fast (top-third) taper: energy goes straight from your hand into the jig. Instant. Snappy. Brilliant for speed jigging and vertical work where you want the metal to dart. Less forgiving when a big fish surges sideways.
  • Parabolic / slow taper: the whole rod loads, stores your energy, and feeds it back on the upstroke, giving the jig that dying-baitfish flutter on the fall. Very forgiving. Slightly less direct.

Different tools. Different religions. I will come back to which one you should actually buy, because it depends on something almost nobody talks about: how much of your fishing is fall and how much of it is lift.

The headline number: 47 kg (104 lb) blank test

Goofish lists a blank test of 47 kg, about 104 lb. That number sounds absurd, and it is worth understanding what it does and does not mean, because it is the number that gets quoted most and understood least.

A blank test is typically done by clamping the rod horizontally and pulling the tip perpendicular to the axis until something gives. It is a static, worst-case, structurally brutal test. It is not a deadlift figure, and it is definitely not "you can set 47 kg of drag."

What it is useful for is comparing confidence in the butt section. It tells you the rod will not fold when you need to turn a fish's head in a hurry. It tells you the mid-section will not go soft on you at 90 metres when you are trying to lift 300 g plus a fish plus the weight of 90 metres of water pressure on the line.

What it does not tell you is anything about sensitivity, action, or how the rod will feel after nine hours. Those are taper and materials questions, and they are the questions that actually determine whether you like the rod. ⚠️


The PE Question: What Line Class Does a Heavy Duty Saltwater Fishing Rod Really Want?

If you take one practical thing from this whole blog, take this.

PE is a diameter standard, not a strength standard.

The PE number comes from the Japanese gou (号) system, originally used to grade silk thread. It standardises how thick the line is. What that line actually breaks at depends on fibre quality, strand count (4, 8, 9, 12), and how it is braided. Two PE 6 braids from two brands can differ by 15 lb or more.

There is an old rule of thumb — PE number times ten gives you pounds — and it is a fine starting point, but modern premium braids routinely beat it. One respected Japanese braid maker lists PE 6 at 85 lb and PE 8 at 112 lb. Another mainstream brand lists the same diameters at 80 lb and 100 lb. That is a 12 lb spread on identical diameter. Read the spool.

Now, the part that actually changes how you fish. On a heavy duty saltwater fishing rod with mh power, your drag setting should be governed by your line, not your rod. The working convention among serious slow-pitch anglers is to set strike drag at somewhere around a quarter to a third of the line's actual breaking strain.

So for my setup on this trip:

  • Main line: 8-strand PE 5 (0.370 mm), rated 78 lb on the spool
  • Strike drag: roughly 9 to 10 kg (20 to 22 lb), which is right around a third of actual break
  • Leader: 130 lb mono, about two rod lengths plus a long bite section
  • Reel: 6000-size spinner, high-speed retrieve

And here is the counter-intuitive bit that took me years to internalise: on a vertical jigging rod, the rod is not what fights the fish. In proper technique you keep the tip low and let the reel and the drag negotiate. The PE number printed on the blank is mostly telling you which jig weight the blank wants to dance and how much reserve sits in the butt. It is not telling you what to set your drag to.

Which is why the Japanese slow-pitch world talks about action tone instead of power. The same rod fished with a light jig works in a strong tone — snappy, short stroke. With a heavier jig it slides into a medium tone, which is usually where the designer intended it to live. Load it past that and it goes soft and sluggish and the tip stops recovering between strokes. Sato Sensei's classic slow-pitch rods carry a nominal jig weight that is emphatically not a maximum — it is the weight at which the blank hits its intended medium tone.

Fishing inside the tone is everything. Overloading a blank is the single most common mistake I see on charter boats, and it is almost always the reason somebody says a rod "felt dead."


Day Two: 95 Metres, and the Fish That Settled It

Second day, bigger water. We ran further to the reef ledge, and the swell had built overnight to maybe 1.5 m with a lazy period. The kind of sea where the boat is constantly doing something slightly different from what you expect.

This is where the tip question stopped being theoretical.

At 95 m, with 1.5 m of swell and 300 m of PE 5 out, the amount of noise coming up the line is enormous. The boat lifts, the line goes tight, the boat drops, the line goes slack, and somewhere in that mess a 12 kg fish taps a jig on the fall and you have maybe half a second to react.

I had the assassin in my right hand and, because I am apparently incapable of learning a lesson quietly, I had also brought my custom rod up on deck for the afternoon session. Dutch took the custom. I took the goofish. Same jig weight, same reel class, same line, same drift.

Ninety minutes. Two takes each. I landed both of mine. He landed one.

Then, at about 14:20, the thing happened that I will remember for a long time. 🎯

I was on the drop with a 260 g long jig, maybe 20 m off the bottom, when the line went light. Not slack. Light. That specific weightless moment when a fish has picked up the jig on the fall and is swimming up with it, and the only way you know is that gravity briefly stopped working.

I wound down, came tight, and set hard into something that immediately went for the reef.

Now here is the technical bit, and it is the whole reason this rod exists. Because the action is fast and concentrated in the top third, the hookset went in clean and fast — no mushy mid-section absorbing the drive. And because the butt has that 47 kg test curve behind it, when the fish turned and ran, the rod simply refused to let its head come around.

The failure mode I was worried about on a fast blank is the "death bend," where the tip gets pulled down to the water, you lose all your angle, the line goes slack and the hooks fall out. It did not happen. The rod loaded to maybe a third of its length and then just… stopped bending. Everything after that was drag and patience.

Fourteen minutes later, a greater amberjack of about 16 kg came over the gunwale, and I may have said something undignified.


The Component Takedown: Why the Hardware on This Rod Punches Above Its Price

Let me be specific about the hardware, because this is where I genuinely changed my mind about what a mid-priced offshore rod can be.

SiC is the one that matters for heavy braid work, and it wins on the property that actually protects your line: thermal conductivity around 60 W/m·K, roughly five times Alconite and more than double Torzite. When a big fish peels line under drag, heat concentrates at the contact point between the braid and the ring. A ring that sheds heat fast is a ring that does not weld your line.

Torzite is marvellous — lighter, thinner, about 40 percent lighter per insert — and worth it on a tournament build where every gram at the tip is argued over. But for a heavy duty saltwater fishing rod working PE 5 to PE 8 at depth, SiC on titanium frames is, in my view, the correct engineering call, not the compromise call.

And here is the bit that ties back to feel: a gram saved at the tip is worth several grams saved at the butt. Guide mass out at the tip drags the blank's natural frequency down, slows recovery, and adds rotational inertia exactly where it hurts most. Titanium frames plus SiC rings on a fast taper is why this rod recovers as cleanly as it does.

Fuji #20 reel seat with locking nut. Boring, correct, and I have had too many reels work loose on rods with fancier seats to argue with it.

EVA handle. Some people turn their noses up at EVA versus cork offshore. Those people have not tried to hold a cork grip with hands covered in fish slime, sunscreen and salt at hour seven. EVA is the right material for this job, full stop. 🤝


Swing Weight: Why My $670 Custom Rod Felt Heavier Than a Rod That Weighs More

This is the part of the story I find genuinely embarrassing, and also the most useful thing I learned.

On the kitchen scale, my custom rod is lighter — 196 g against something in the 230 to 250 g range for the ocean assassin. Goofish does not publish a weight for this blank, which is annoying, but on my scale with the same reel mounted it was clearly the heavier outfit.

And yet. On the water, on day two, in the swell, my custom rod felt like more work.

The reason is swing weight, a concept borrowed from golf that more anglers should steal. Swing weight is rotational inertia — how heavy something feels while it is moving, not while it is sitting on a scale. Two rods can weigh identically and feel like different sports, because mass distribution is what your muscles actually fight.

What drove swing weight up on my custom:

  • Longer foregrip. I asked for it. I liked how it looked. It put mass out front.
  • Spiral wrap with a heavier stripper guide, sitting further from my hand than a conventional layout would place it
  • Slightly heavier thread and finish work near the mid-blank, because I asked for a double-wrap on every guide foot for durability

What the goofish does well:

  • The mass sits low, in the mid and butt, where the 47 kg test curve needs material anyway
  • Minimal foregrip, so the hand sits closer to the blank's mass
  • Titanium-framed guides keeping the tip light, which matters far more than butt weight

There is a second, related concept here: natural frequency. A rod blank is a cantilevered beam with a resonant frequency, and rod builders have used that measurement for decades as an objective proxy for what anglers call "crispness." Higher frequency, faster recovery, less tip bounce mushing out your cadence. Mass at the tip drags frequency down. Sound familiar? It is the same lesson twice.

The lesson I am taking home: I optimised my custom rod for the spec sheet, not for nine hours of use. I chased grams instead of chasing balance. That is a $670 mistake, and it is a much more useful thing to admit than "my favourite rod is best."


The Twist Test: Where the Japanese Flagships Still Beat Both of Us

I want to be fair here, because a blog that says everything is wonderful is a blog you should close.

Grip a blank at the foregrip with both hands and twist it. Absurdly unscientific. Completely diagnostic.

This is where the top Japanese blanks separate themselves, and they do it with engineering that is genuinely not marketing vapour:

  • Shimano uses Spiral X, with inner and outer layers of carbon tape wound diagonally in opposite directions around a vertical-fibre core, plus Hi-Power X on the outermost layer. The newest Spiral X Core integrates Toray Nanoalloy, and Shimano publishes figures of up to 10 percent more torsional rigidity and 15 percent more compressional rigidity than standard Spiral X — without adding weight.
  • Daiwa uses X45 bias construction and, on the Saltiga series, X45 Full Shield, which exists specifically to kill blank twist under load, plus 3DX on the heavier models.

Why does twist matter for feel? Because twist is lost information. When a rod ovalises and spirals under off-axis load, vibration that should have travelled cleanly up the blank into your palm gets dissipated sideways. You feel less. And offshore, most loads are off-axis, because fish do not cooperate.

The goofish ocean assassin twists more than a Saltiga. It just does. On day three, in 140 m with a heavy jig and a fish pulling sideways, I could feel the difference — a slight softening of signal when the rod was loaded off the spine.

Is it enough to matter for most anglers? Honestly, no. Is it real? Yes, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.


Day Three: 140 Metres, and the Limits of a Fast Taper

The sea stayed down and we ran for the deep mark. This is where I want to be honest about what the assassin is not.

At 140 m, with a 400 g jig and real current, I was at the top of this rod's comfort window. The listed maximum is 650 g, but I will say this as plainly as I can: 650 g is a survival number, not a fishing number.

Somewhere past 400 g on this blank, the tip stopped recovering fully between strokes. The jig went from dancing to plodding. I could no longer cleanly separate "jig ticking bottom" from "fish mouthing jig," which is the entire ballgame in deep water.

I lost one fish that afternoon that I should have hooked, and it was my fault for overloading the tone, not the rod's fault for having limits.

That said: on the same mark, at the same depth, Dutch's parabolic Japanese rod was working 450 g beautifully, because a parabolic taper is simply designed to store and release that much mass. Different tool. Confirmation of the thing I already knew and did not want to admit.

My honest operating window for the 64 mh: 200 g to 400 g, in 40 to 120 m, with PE 4 to PE 6. Inside that window I think it is genuinely excellent. Outside it, go parabolic.


So Is It the Best Jigging Rod for Offshore?

I have been sitting on this question for three weeks, and I am going to answer it in a way that is more useful than a yes or no.

Is the goofish ocean assassin the best jigging rod for offshore, full stop? No. If money is genuinely no object and you want one rod to rule everything, a Daiwa Saltiga SJ or a Shimano Ocea Jigger Infinity Motive is a more refined instrument. Better twist resistance, better weight distribution, better warranty backing. I have fished them. They are wonderful.

Is it the best jigging rod for offshore at its price? I now think it is very close, and here is the specific reason: it is the only rod I have handled under $450 that pairs a fast top-third taper with titanium-framed SiC guides and a genuine 47 kg test curve in the butt.

That combination is unusual. Most rods in this price band give you the taper but put cheap ceramics on it, or give you the hardware but with a soft, vague blank underneath. Getting both the snap and the backbone and the guide package is what makes this rod interesting rather than merely cheap.

And here is what I would tell you if you were standing at my boat:

Buy the ocean assassin if:

  • You jig vertically or speed-jig with 200 to 400 g metals in 40 to 120 m ⚡
  • You want maximum information transmitted to your hand and you are confident enough on the drag to handle a rod that does not forgive you
  • You already own a substantial 5000 or 6000 size reel that will balance it properly
  • Your budget is under $450 and you refuse to feel shortchanged

Do not buy it if:

  • You are a dedicated slow-pitch angler working 300 g-plus jigs in 150 m and deeper — get a parabolic blank, and do not argue with me about it
  • You want a travel rod. A one-piece 6'4" stick is a commitment. Measure your car. Measure your hallway. I mean it. 😅
  • You set your drag by feel and then forget about it. A fast taper with locked-down drag will pull hooks, and you will blame the rod

Buy the custom rod if:

  • You know exactly what you want, because you have fished enough to have an opinion
  • You have a builder who will actually listen, and who will tell you when you are wrong about foregrip length
  • You care about the thing as an object, not just as a tool. That is a legitimate reason. I am not going to pretend it is not why I built mine.

How I Now Set Up a Premium Vertical Jigging Rod (The Checklist I Wish I Had Years Ago)

Whether you buy the goofish or a Japanese flagship, this is the setup sequence that has made the biggest difference to my catch rate. Steal it.

1. Balance the outfit before you fish it, not after.

Mount your reel, spool it with the line you will actually use, then lay the rod across one finger. For a vertical jigging outfit, the balance point should sit at the reel seat or no more than 2 to 3 cm in front of it. If it sits way forward, you are going to be tired by 10:00 and you will blame the fish. Counter-intuitive tip: a slightly heavier reel often fixes a nose-heavy fast-action blank, because it pulls the mass back toward your hand. Do not chase the lightest reel. Chase the balanced outfit.

2. Match line class to depth, not to habit.

  • 40 to 80 m: PE 3 to PE 4
  • 80 to 130 m: PE 4 to PE 6
  • 130 m and deeper, or heavy structure: PE 6 to PE 8

Thinner line sinks faster, which means more time in the strike zone and a more natural fall. Going heavier than you need costs you bites and you will not notice until you fish next to somebody who did not.

3. Set drag as a fraction of line strength, not by feel.

Roughly a quarter to a third of the actual breaking strain printed on your spool. On PE 5 rated at 78 lb, that is around 9 to 11 kg at strike. Use a scale. Every angler who guesses guesses too high.

4. Fish inside the tone.

Find the jig weight where the rod's tip recovers fully between strokes. That is the weight the designer tuned for. Everything else is compromise, and overloading is far worse than underloading.

5. Rig twin assist hooks on both eyes.

Asymmetrical slow-pitch jigs swim horizontally, and you have no idea which side the fish will come from. Two assist hooks, front and rear, turns "mouthed it and spat it" into a hookup. This single change probably added 20 percent to my landing rate.

6. Keep the tip low when you fight.

Use the reel. Use the drag. Fast-action blanks in particular will punish the pump-and-crank habit, because a high tip angle on a stiff rod is how you pull hooks and, occasionally, how you break blanks.


The Conversation I Had With Wen When I Got Back

I took the custom rod to Wen's workshop the following weekend and showed him the crack.

He looked at it for about three seconds, then looked at me. "This is finish only," he said. "You know this."

"I know."

"You fished the yellow rod the whole trip, though." He has a frightening ability to read people.

"Three days," I said.

He nodded, took the rod, and started cutting thread off it without another word. Then, about ten minutes in, without looking up: "Your foregrip is too long. I told you. You wanted it to look a certain way."

I did want it to look a certain way. It did look a certain way. It also put 20 g of EVA four inches further from my hand than it needed to be, and that is four inches of lever arm I paid for on every single lift for two seasons.

He is rebuilding it. Shorter foregrip, lighter tip guide, one fewer guide on the mid-blank. It will come back lighter on the swing and very slightly heavier on the scale, which is the correct trade and the entire moral of this blog.


The Honest Verdict

I did not swap my custom rod for the goofish ocean assassin because the goofish is a better rod. I swapped it because I was 40 miles offshore with a cracked finish and a long day ahead, and the rod in the bag that morning happened to be the one that was better matched to the job.

That is the thing nobody wants to hear about gear. We want a hierarchy. We want to be told that the expensive thing is best, or that the cheap thing is secretly best, because either answer lets us stop thinking.

The actual answer is much less satisfying and much more useful: a mid-priced rod, correctly balanced, correctly lined, and fished inside its jig window, will outperform a flagship fished badly. Every single time.

The 6'4" 64 mh with mh power is a fast, honest, slightly unforgiving rod with a genuinely serious component package and a butt section that will not quit. It is not the most refined premium vertical jigging rod I have ever held. It is, right now, the one I would recommend first to anybody getting seriously into offshore jigging without a sponsor, and I will stand behind that.

And my custom rod is going to come back from Wen better than it was, because of what this yellow stick taught me. Which is a weird sentence to type, and completely true. 🔥
