The GOOFISH Abyss Jigger Gen 1 saltwater jigging reel combines a 6.08:1 gear ratio, CNC-machined aluminum construction and a ball-style metal grip for vertical and slow-pitch jigging setups. Choose Blue/Silver or Navy Blue/Gold, with separate left- and right-hand retrieve options.

Before your next trip, choose the hand you use to wind, match the reel to a compatible rod seat and spool it with suitable line. The Gen 1's open frame, machined handle arm and perforated spherical grip give this model its distinctive appearance.

Specifications

Specification Abyss Jigger Gen 1
Gear ratio 6.08:1
Reference retrieve per handle turn 30.06 inches
Bearing configuration 9+2 stainless steel bearings
Listed maximum drag 30kg
Approximate reel weight 544g
Listed line capacity 300m of 0.37mm line
Construction CNC-machined aluminum with anodized finish
Grip Ball-style metal knob
Retrieve options Left-hand / Right-hand
Color options Blue/Silver / Navy Blue/Gold

Weight and line capacity are approximate. Actual capacity depends on line diameter and packing. Retrieve changes with spool fill; 30.06 inches is a reference value rather than a fixed amount at every spool level. Maximum drag is not a recommended everyday setting or a fish-lifting rating.

Choose your retrieve hand and color

Select Left if you wind with your left hand, or Right if you wind with your right hand. Each retrieve option is available in Blue/Silver and Navy Blue/Gold. All four listed combinations use the 6.08:1 gear ratio and 30.06-inch reference retrieve. Check the full selection before ordering; do not assume the handle can be switched between sides.

Four Gen 1 reel choices: Blue/Silver left and right retrieve, and Navy Blue/Gold left and right retrieve

Gen 1 component details

  • Ball-style metal grip with visible perforations.
  • Machined metal handle arm with an elongated cutout.
  • Aluminum reel foot secured with four visible screws.
  • Open-frame spool access and external drag controls.

Check that the reel foot fits your rod seat and that the reel sits securely before fishing. Use the supplied instructions for drag adjustment; do not confuse the spool-release control with the drag setting.

Build a matching jigging setup

Match rod, reel, main line, leader, knots and drag as a complete system. Choose jig weight for the rod and fishing conditions; line capacity alone does not establish a guaranteed fishing depth. Set drag conservatively for the weakest part of the setup and use appropriate landing equipment rather than lifting fish with the reel or rod.

Compare models in the slow jigging rod collection, or browse fishing jigs for your next setup.

Everyday questions and troubleshooting

Why is line building up on one side of the spool?

Watch the line lay while winding. Maintain steady tension and guide the line evenly across the spool as needed, following the supplied instructions. Avoid overfilling. Stop and clear loose loops or tangled line before continuing. Keep fingers clear of moving parts and never wrap loaded line around your hand.

Why does line release more easily than expected?

Check the drag setting, knots and line attachment to the spool. Test gently in a safe area with hooks and lures secured away from people. Choose a conservative setting suitable for your line, leader, knots and rod; do not tighten to the listed maximum simply to stop line release. If the controls do not respond normally, stop use and seek service.

What if winding feels stiff or rough?

Remove line tension safely and inspect for tangled line or visible debris. Do not force the handle or use it to free a snag. If the reel remains rough without load, starts grinding or shows inconsistent drag, stop using it and arrange inspection. Do not open the reel or spray lubricant into internal parts as a quick fix.

What should I do about new noises or a loose handle?

Stop fishing and inspect the handle and visible fittings. Follow the model's instructions for any external adjustment; do not overtighten fittings or guess an internal repair. Continued noise or play calls for service rather than further use.

Care after saltwater use

A brief cleaning routine after each saltwater session helps keep exterior salt residue from accumulating. The reel's supplied maintenance instructions take priority over general care advice.

  1. Remove salt: wipe exterior surfaces and the grip with a soft cloth lightly dampened with fresh water.
  2. Clean gently: use a soft brush on accessible exterior crevices. Avoid pressure jets, immersion, abrasive cleaners and solvents.
  3. Dry fully: air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place before storage. Do not seal a damp reel in a bag or case.
  4. Inspect before use: check line abrasion, knots, the handle and visible fittings; test winding and drag gently before fishing.
  5. Store dry: keep the reel in a dry, ventilated location. An anodized finish does not remove the need for saltwater care.

Where should I add oil or grease?

Use only the lubricant, locations and service intervals specified in the supplied manual. Do not spray oil into bearings or drag parts indiscriminately. If model-specific instructions are unavailable, ask for service guidance before opening the reel. After immersion or persistent grinding, avoid further use until the reel has been inspected.

Retrieve and spool fill

The reference calculation uses the reel's 6.08:1 gearing and different spool-fill diameters. A fuller spool retrieves more line per handle turn than a nearly empty spool.

Customer photo review of GOOFISH® MONSTER DEEP-7ft(213cm) Length PE4-7 Jig 200-700g Japan FUJI Solid Nano Jigging Rod

Had a great day off the coast of NC. This wahoo was a great prize. He hit my free line, which had a cigar minnow on it. Take a day or two off and go fishing.

GOOFISH® MONSTER DEEP-7ft(213cm) Length PE4-7 Jig 200-700g Japan FUJI Solid Nano Jigging Rod

Store owner replied: What a fish — that's a serious trophy wahoo! 🎣 Huge congrats. You can't beat a free-lined cigar minnow; it's hands down one of the deadliest presentations for wahoo off the NC coast, and it sounds like it worked perfectly. Couldn't agree more about taking a couple of days off to get offshore — there's nothing better. Next time you head out, keep a Goofish jigging rod rigged and ready as a backup; when the free line goes quiet, dropping a jig and burning it back is a great way to tempt another one up, and the Goofish backbone handles that kind of fight beautifully. Thanks for sharing the catch — we'd love to see photos from your next trip. Tight lines out there!

Use these specifically for new England bluefin up to 200lbs and they are fantastic rods.
